Weekend Writing Warriors-Sexy Steampunk Snippet 3

Welcome to the Weekend Writing Warriors, the perfect place to discover new authors and fall in love with their writing. Each Sunday we share 8 sentences from a current or finished manuscript. Click here for the rest of the amazing writers participating.

I apologize for not adding the genre when I added my link to the WeWriWa page, I saw it too late. I write the naughty stuff;).better-wewriwa

I’m continuing with my upcoming sexy steampunk Christmas novella. It releases December 9th, 2014 from Loose Id and is swashbuckling, tongue-in-cheek Christmas fun. After storming into her boss’ office and resigning we discovered a little bit more why she behaved that way last week. Today’s snippet is only a few lines after last week’s. She has just discovered that Jack Smith, a member from the Cardiff office who joined the London Royal Port Authority four months ago, is also supposed to work that Christmas Eve shift. And as usual, a man may change things…

“Images of the man who had arrived four months ago flashed through her mind. The tall, rugged figure. The black hair and azure eyes that captured her every time he looked at her. The edge of danger surrounding him.

Since Her Majesty Queen Victoria had passed the Equal Rights Act shortly after she took the throne, men had needed to adjust to changes in their lives. Even now, nearly five decades after the law passed, Holly still found some men staring at her with a frown when they realized they were required to follow her orders. As if she couldn’t do the same work as good if not better as her male colleagues.

But Jack Smith had never responded in that manner.”

I have seen two preliminary covers for DAF and they were both utterly incredible;). I hope I can share the final cover with you very soon! FPWL, my current WIP, is still fighting me tooth and nail for every word, but I’m doing my best to push through. Even if I only write 100 words it’s 100 more than I had. Hope all the NaNo-ers are doing well and are getting ready for the final sprint.

Have a great Sunday and as always Happy Writing!

Preliminary blurb:

Working as an Aether Traffic Controller saved Holly Acklin after the death of her husband, but now she wants more—including a night of uninhibited passion with Jack Smith, whose very presence has kept her body tingling for months.

Special Agent Jack Smith kept his identity a secret when he came to the London Royal Port Authority with one assignment, one he cannot fail. It holds him back from following his attraction to Holly. But on the eve he must complete the mission, Holly asks for one night with no rules or boundaries, and his control snaps.

When London experiences an unexpectedly white Christmas, all dirigible traffic is grounded, leaving Holly and Jack free to act upon their stormy passions. Holly finds her determination to stay emotion-free crumbling unaware Jack is experiencing the same need. Each lover wishes for more, but fears it can’t be. Instead they focus their desires in mind-blowing passion.

But when Holly discovers that Jack isn’t who he claimed to be, everything is thrown into turmoil. Can she trust the man she thought she knew? Can Jack trust her with his true identity? Both of them have to reassess if duty is more important than love.

  1. This sounds delicious! Great snippet and synopsis.

  2. I see the frustration of the men being forced to accept her position. Funny how tensions continue after a law has been passed. Good snippet.

  3. Ah, I like the cut of his jib. Can’t wait to meet him.

  4. Ooh, he sounds like a keeper! Can’t wait to see how this continues.

  5. Oooh, awesome. I like the sound of him.

  6. I like Jack, beautifully written but I would change ‘better as her male’ to better than? Great snippet though 🙂

  7. He sounds like an interesting chap. Nice 8.

  8. YUM! Love your description of Jack and your explanation of the laws set five decades ago. Terrific!

  9. Well, you hooked me with the blurb. The excerpt was just icing on the cake. Delicious, delicious, manly icing. 😀 Great job!

  10. Ooh, that’s interesting–forcing a rapid change instead of a gradual one when it comes to women in the workplace would have all kinds of unfortunate results, I bet.

Good luck on the last week of NaNo!

  11. “…men had needed to adjust to changes in their lives.” A lesson for us all there 😀 Nice 8!

  12. A fascinating world you’ve built to frame this story, can’t wait to read more and Jack sounds delicious. Great 8!

  13. All hail, Victoriana! 😀

If anyone would, it would be her—since Elizabeth I seems to have dropped the ball (ovary?).

    Great 8, Tina!

  14. Oh ho, so just how did he look at her? Yummy : )

  15. Jack Smith isn’t threatened by a woman, nice, sound like a man who is confident. Tall and rugged is just an added NICE. Great 8.
